In India, each day is associated with the celebration of a different Devi or Devata. It is believed that celebrating different Gods on different days adds meaning to one’s everyday life. Each God has a different contribution to make in the life of devotees and celebrating a particular God on a specified day just amplifies the auspiciousness of the day. On Saturday, it is believed that one should praise Lord Shani.

Lord Shani is the son of Surya (the sun) and an embodiment of the planet Saturn. As per astrology, he’s one of the most dreaded ‘graha’. It is believed that if a person’s Shani causes obstruction, then, in that case, no other planets can deliver any positive results – such is the power of Lord Shani.

His legends and myths present him as the God that gives us the results of our deeds all throughout our life and it is Yama who gives results of our deeds after our death. These two sons of Surya (the sun) deliver as per our karma. And it is believed that if Lord Shani showers his blessings upon you then you can strongly battle the hardships of life. Lord Shani represents struggle; but those who overcome the struggle posed by him become more insightful, mature and spiritually lifted. Lord Shani believes in slow delivery of your good or bad deeds and he urges hard work and disciplined behaviour.

Lord Shani is also called the ‘evil-eyed-one’ and it is believed that the ill-positioning of a person’s Shani (Saturn) can cause serious hardships in a person’s life; which is why it is important to appease Lord Shani.

1. Offer him mustard oil and sesame seeds and chant mantra

This is one of the most popular ways to appease Lord Shani. For this method, you need to take a copper utensil and add mustard oil and sesame seeds and offer this to Lord Shani’s deity while chanting Shani  Mantra – Om Praam Preem Praom Saha Shanayshchraey Namah.

You may also offer a banana, a flower and if possible a betel leaf and black suparee.

2. Worship Lord Hanuman

Lord Hanuman comes to rescue as always! It is believed that those who worship Lord Hanuman with utmost dedication, Lord Shani blesses them. As per Hindu mythology, it is believed that Lord Hanuman saved Lord Shani from the evil of the Ravana. Since then it is believed that if you want to appease Lord Shani then you should begin by devoting yourself to Lord Hanuman.

3. Make Donations

One of the best ways to praise Lord Shani is by offering to the needy and the disadvantaged. Donating to the poor is one way you can correct your karmic deeds. Lord Shani blesses those who willingly and voluntarily donate to those in need, without seeking anything in return.

4. Clean your unwanted clutter

It is believed that Lord Shani removes all the things that are not needed for your growth. Thus, before he decides what should be removed from your life, you make it a point to de-clutter your mess. Clean your house and get rid of all the material waste that has been lying since the longest possible time but has never come to your use. Also, free yourself from all the material thoughts and negative influence by keeping your mind at peace.

5. Worship the Peepal Tree and the crow

To praise Lord Shani, you should worship the Peepal tree – the king of trees. Every Saturday, worship the Peepal tree either by pouring some mustard oil on its branch or by worshipping it before the sunrise. If this is not possible one may make use of a Navgraha Chowki.

You should also feed a crow on Saturday as it is believed that Lord Shani charioted on a crow. A crow is not seen as an auspicious bird in India, thus to keep yourself away from the bad luck; make it a point that you appease the crow. Also, even though crows are not the most favourite of all, they are one of the smartest of all; so you should feed the crow to get blessed with wisdom. If this is not possible feed the birds on a daily basis or at least on a Saturday.
