Pundit Roshan Singh – Jyotish Astrologer
Navagraha Puja—the worship of the nine celestial bodies—is most commonly conducted on a Saturday because this day is ruled by Shani Dev (the deity of Saturn). In Vedic astrology, Shani is the planetary lord of Saturday (Shanivar) and the dispenser of karma, justice, and hardships. Because Saturn’s malefic eye (Shani Dosha or Sade Sati) is feared for causing intense delays, obstacles, and suffering, performing a Navagraha Puja on Saturday is highly impactful to pacify Shani’s powerful energies and restore balance.
This day and the ritual itself are deeply linked to Lord Hanuman and Suryanarain (Surya, the Sun God) through profound mythological stories of familial bonds, cosmic mentorship, and divine promises.
The Connection to Suryanarain (The Sun God)
Suryanarain plays a central, dual role in this cosmic web:
- The Father of Shani: Mythologically, Lord Shani is the son of Suryanarain and his consort Chhaya (Shadow). According to scripture, Surya and Shani share a famously strained and complex father-son relationship. Shani’s harsh, burning gaze was so intense that it is said to have temporarily scorched his father upon his birth. Therefore, pacifying Shani on Saturday inherently involves acknowledging his lineage to Surya.
- The Guru of Hanuman: Suryanarain is also the supreme spiritual teacher (Guru) of Lord Hanuman. Surya taught Hanuman all the holy Vedas, philosophies, and secret scriptures. Because Hanuman is the ultimate, ever-grateful disciple of Surya, he holds a deep respect for his Guru’s family—including his Guru’s son, Shani.
The Connection to Lord Hanuman
Worshipping Hanuman on Saturdays is considered the ultimate shield against the harsh energy of the Navagrahas, particularly Saturn. This is tied to two main legends:
- The Rescue from Ravana: The demon king Ravana had used his immense power to capture all nine planetary deities (the Navagrahas) and imprisoned them—forcing Shani to be stepped on or locked away so Ravana’s son could be immortal. When Hanuman went to Lanka to find Mata Sita, he discovered the trapped Navagrahas and broke them free from Ravana’s captivity. Filled with immense gratitude, Shani Dev granted a boon to Hanuman: “Anyone who worships you on Saturdays will be protected from my malefic glance and cosmic hardships.”
- Subduing Shani’s Pride: In another tale, Shani attempted to step onto Hanuman’s shoulders to cast his planetary influence over him. Hanuman immediately expanded his size, trapping Shani painfully against the ceiling. Realizing Hanuman’s supreme strength and humility, Shani conceded defeat and promised to never trouble Hanuman’s devotees.
Summary: The Saturday Convergence
When a devotee conducts a Navagraha Puja on Saturday, they worship Suryanarain as the chief center of the planetary matrix, pray to his son Shani to ease their karmic burdens, and invoke Hanuman (Surya’s prime disciple) to serve as the divine guarantor who ensures Shani’s intense gaze transforms from a curse into a blessing.
